If you have always been intrigued by how and in what ways films are made, then A level Film Studies may be for you.

This course not only focuses on filmmaking but the context in which these films were made, particularly in terms of their historical and societal contexts. During the Film Studies course you will deconstruct and analyse a wide variety of films, including films such as Pulp Fiction, Casablanca, City of God and Shaun of the Dead. You will also get to produce your very own film!

Preparing for this course

Use the time to watch as many different films as you can. The IMDB top 250 is a great place to start. Watching a film that is not in English is also great preparation.

What can I study

Film is often an inspiring escape from reality and a culturally significant medium. It is a means of expression and often a filmmaker’s artistic take and commentary on the world in which they live. Nowadays, films are incredibly influential in shaping our society, they often carry a hidden meaning, a meaning which you can learn to uncover if you study Film Studies. You will study films and learn about the various stories and techniques filmmakers use in order to portray their message. You will learn all about mise en scene, cinematography and all it takes to produce a film. What is more, you will get to produce your very own film too!

You will be assessed through a range of different methods. You will undertake two exam based components which will cover film movements ranging from contemporary mainstream film, silent films of the 1920s, or Brazilian gangster films. You will also produce a coursework where you will be required to create your very own short film or screenplay.

Entry Requirements

Standard

5 GCSEs at grades 9 - 5 and or including, English Language and Maths at grade 4 or above.

Course specific

You will need a grade 5 or above in English Language or Literature .

You can study 3 a levels or a combination of 2 a levels and 1 btec subsidiary (a level equivalent).
