A Level

This two year A Level course covers a broad base of lens based disciplines. You will be introduced to a wide variety of possibilities which will help you develop your own practice as a creative photographer.

As well as working on both film and digital formats, shooting on location and in the studio, you will be able to explore and experiment with other media including, scanography, digital manipulation and appropriate combinations of media.

What will I study

If you choose to study Photography at KGV, you will have the opportunity to work in an expressive and personal way and you will be engaging with social and cultural issues. You will also be expected to develop an open and exploratory approach to your work and to develop informed opinions, with an increasing awareness of contemporary issues and industry level practice, exploring commercial and artistic avenues.

You will get the chance to work on both film and digital formats, shooting on location and in the studio. In addition, you will be able to explore and experiment with other media including, scanography, digital manipulation and appropriate combinations of media. You will be introduced to a broad range of skills which will be an essential tool when progressing with your photography in the future.

You will receive hands on learning! We deliver Artists workshops, lectures and field trips throughout the academic year. You will also visit BA (Hons) Degree exhibitions and MA exhibitions across the region. You can expect annual trips for gallery and exhibition research which include:

  • Paris – Musée d’Orsay, Centre Pompidou, Musée du Louvre, European House of Photography
  • Barcelona – Picasso Museum, Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art
  • London – Tate Modern, White Cube, Tate Britain, Royal Academy of Art, National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery
  • Manchester – Whitworth Gallery, Manchester City Gallery
  • Liverpool – Tate Liverpool, The Walker Art Gallery, Blue Coat, Open Eye Gallery

Previous students have gone on to study BA Hons Photography at establishments such as the University of the Arts London, De Montfort University, Falmouth University, University of Westminster, University of Central England and Manchester Metropolitan University.

Entry Requirements

Standard

5 GCSEs at grades 9 - 5 and or including, English Language and Maths at grade 4 or above.

Course specific

You will need a grade 4 or above in an art, design or a photography subject. If you do not have this experience, please contact the college admissions team to discuss this further.

You can study 3 a levels or a combination of 2 a levels and 1 btec subsidiary (a level equivalent).
