KGV College's Holocaust Memorial Service - 29/01/10
KGV Holocaust Memorial Service

This year marks the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest of all the Nazi death camps, where nearly 2m. men, women and children (mainly Jews) were killed between 1942 and 1945. Students at King George V College have been commemorating the event and remembering other victims of more recent genocides in a week of activities, culmninating in a special Holocaust Memorial Service held in the College's Memorial Garden.

Staff and students attended the service which was organised by members of the Holocaust Awareness Group, Former KGV Assistant Vice-Principal Mrs Pauline Collier is a Fellow of the Imperial War Museum and attended the service as the guest speaker. She reminded everyone of the dangers of just standing by and refusing to speak out when confronted by racism.

Members of the Holocaust Group had made yellow stars, each one bearing the name of a child who had perished in the Holocaust. These stars were then hung on the Memorial Tree, as a permanent reminder of the terrible cost to humanity when racism and hatred are ignored and allowed to take root. Those attending were invited to sign the College's Book of Remembrance after the service.
