The nature of post 16 provision is changing and KGV is happy to be at the
heart of those changes. Alongside the more traditional Advanced level
programme we also offer a variety of different routes to success that
guarantee something for everyone!
What if I don’t get the grades?
If you don’t get the grades you need to guarantee a place on your chosen courses you may still be offered a place via our clearing process. This means that a senior member of staff or the enrolment team will discuss your options with you and consider the type of programme that is right for you. You may need to re-negotiate your course choices in order to adopt an individual learning plan that is tailored to your skills and needs.
This is the most popular programme at King George V College and
consists of AS and A2 courses, or the BTEC National Diploma, or the International Baccalaureate programme, or the Diploma.
Choosing your next step can be a daunting task, especially when there are
so many courses to choose from! It is important that you look at all the
information and gets lots of advice in order to make the right decisions for
you. Come along to one of our Open Evenings or induction days to get a
flavour of life at KGV but also make use of the resources at your own
school such as Careers advisors and teachers who know you well and will
be able to help you make informed choices.
Ask yourself:
Which subjects do I enjoy the most?
What aspects of the subjects do I enjoy/which skills do I like using?
Which subjects am I going to need for my future career?
Which subjects can I choose to give myself the widest range of
options?
When you have asked yourself these questions the next step is to look
through the information for courses you are interested in. Have a look at
the construction of the courses, the type of topics studied and the way in
which the course is assessed: do you think you would be
successful in this subject? Make a list of questions to ask
teachers at Open Evenings - they are more than happy to help!
What grades do I need?
Generally 4 x B grades but see specific subject pages for further guidance.
What can the 3 Year Advanced programme offer me?
This programme offers the opportunity of improving Level 2 (GCSE or BTEC First qualifications in the
first year and progressing to Level 3 (BTEC National) qualifications in years 2 and 3.
In Year 1 students will study one BTEC First Diploma providing a qualification equivalent to 4 GCSEs.
There is also the opportunity to restudy one of either Maths, English or Science GCSE.
In Years 2/3 students then move on to study a National Programme or the Diploma (see page 9). A
BTEC National Diploma equivalent to 3 A levels can be chosen or a BTEC National Certificate with an
additional AS level alongside. Maths, English or Science GCSE can also be retaken if necessary at this
stage.
What makes a good 3 year advanced programme student?
Students who wish to enter the 3 year advanced programme starting with a BTEC First Diploma
course will qualify for entry if they achieve 4 or more D grades at GCSE. Most importantly students
entering this course must be willing to work hard and be determined to succeed.
What can I expect from the 3 year advanced programme?
You will need to decide which of the BTEC First Diplomas outlined in this course guide is the best
option for you as a starting point. You need to think carefully about which of the courses will be the
most interesting and enjoyable for you to study. Remember that once the BTEC First Diploma is
complete you will move on to a 2 year BTEC National qualification.
All students will have a personal tutor who will understand the specific needs of students on this
course.
You will have a tutor group session once a week where you will be able to work with other 3 Year
Advanced Programme students and cover a tutorial programme designed to help gain the skills
required to be successful on this course. You meet your tutor regularly to help support you on the
course and advise you on the opportunities open to you in the future.
