THE SPORTING LIFE
Fitness Suite

So, you’ve chosen your courses, you’ve chosen your clubs and you’ve started to get your bearings around the college but you’ve still got a lot of energy so what else can you do? Why not become a member of KGV’s fitness room which boasts a range of modern gym equipment including rowing machines, exercise bikes, treadmills and weights. If classes are more to your taste you can take part in the lunchtime activities including aerobics and interval training. If you are still feeling energetic then you can join some of the sports teams or lunchtime sporting societies at the college including rugby and hockey teams or improve your skills with badminton or tennis lessons; there really is something for everybody!

Sporting Successes
KGV rugby players Bryn Elesedy and Danny Salisbury had the honour of being selected for the North of England Colleges squad 2009-2010. Bryn and Danny played for the North against the South in a series of games held in Warwick. The matches will serve as trials for the full England Colleges squad. Vincent Bailey, a dedicated and talented player has been selected for the National Squad of English Colleges. Vincent progressed through the Northern trials to a rigorous weekend trial at Lillieshall where the best of the North were competing with the best of the South for a place in the final squad of 22. During this trial Vincent was chosen to represent English Colleges and is the first FDC player to have been chosen for the National Squad in eight years. Daniel Hughes, currently studying a BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport and hoping to go to university to study sports science, travelled to Belgium to compete in The Herckenrode Cup International Kumite and Kata Karate tournament. He won two bronze medals in the 18 - 24 age group. He said “It was a great experience and the competition was really tough.”

Sports Relief
Students raised over £500 for Sports Relief by organising a variety of events including a 5k run, the sport relief mile with a twist and an indoor sponsored rowing competition. Organisers Mike Butler & Carolyn Moir were delighted with the enthusiasm and imagination of the student contributors. Jack Stoddart, James Smith and Andy Kasper completed an ‘indoor’ sponsored row. The boxing marathon saw Evie Robinson and Cecilie Ohnstad punching their way for the entire Sports Relief mile, Dan Hardy ran the mile in a red morph suit and Basil Manongwa ran 5km.

There are lots of sporting activities to get involved with. Some of the activities include:

There are regular features against local schools and colleges; some are league competitions others, though still competitive, are friendlier in tone!

If you wish to represent a college team please indicate this on your application form and mention it during your course discussion. If we know in advance we can organise your timetable so you have Wednesday afternoons free for sport and training!
